Roles Assigned Automatically
When an individual is added to LexisNexis® CounselLink®, they are assigned roles based on their job title (partner, paralegal, admin, etc.). A role determines what emails they receive and what tasks they are authorized to perform. Admins can change or remove these roles.
The list below show the roles assigned by default.

Roles for the Law Firm
Each role in CounselLink serves a distinct purpose and provides unique permissions. Some roles receive emails regarding associated actions. Because CounselLink is a customizable application, some roles may be unavailable for your firm. All roles in CounselLink are defined below.
| Role | Description |
|---|---|
| Accounts Payable Contact | The Accounts Payable Contact receives invoices for CounselLink’s administrative charges, if applicable. No emails are sent to users with this role. |
| Accounts Receivable Contact | The Accounts Receivable Contact receives CounselLink invoice notifications via email. |
| Admin | The Admin controls the roles of others within the firm. They can add timekeepers, add/remove offices, and add/edit rates. Emails are sent regarding registration issues, attorney status, user logins, invoicing reminders, and all matter issues, including office eligibility to receive matters, matter acceptance, declines and withdrawals. The Admin role can perform all tasks except for those reserved for the Partner. |
| Budget Contact | The Budget Contact is responsible for the review and approval of budgets. Emails are sent regarding declined budgets, budgets requiring approval or when budget thresholds are exceeded. |
| Document Administrator | A user with the Document Administrator role may access, if configured, the Document Attachment feature. This feature gives the ability to attach files directly to matters or invoices. This is helpful for tracking additional correspondence, receipts, or other outside information that may be associated with a matter or invoice. No emails are sent to users with this role. |
| Matter Change Approval Contact | Individuals with this role are responsible for approving and/or initiating changes to fees on matters with clients. Emails are sent regarding decisions for matter change requests. |
| Partner | The Partner has the same access levels as the Admin role plus one additional responsibility. They have access to all parts of the application. They are sent virtually all the same emails as the Admin role. The Partner role includes all other roles and is equivalent to Admin in the amount of CounselLink access. Only a partner can sign the contracts as part of the on-line law firm registration process. |
| Practicing Attorney | This role is an Associate or practicing attorney. They may receive emails regarding their credential or office status. |
Role Privileges
Each law firm role has certain privileges that determine the data each user can view and the functions each user can perform. Listed below are all the roles a user may be assigned, including a user with no role.
Roles are given to each user automatically, based on the job title, during the individual setup process. This can be adjusted at a later date. Users with the title of Legal Assistant, Paralegal, or other, do not have any user privileges assigned to them automatically.
